Sanding wood before oil or varnish: which final grit?

For oil, P180 to P240 is enough; under varnish, finish at P240 and key between coats with P320. Plus the damp-cloth trick that keeps the surface smooth after the first coat.

FAQ

Questions about the products

Abrasives, accessories, a machine or a set – where do I start?

If you have a project ahead of you, the easiest start is a set: it contains the whole grit sequence from the first pass to the finished surface. If you already know what’s missing, filter by grit, size or machine. Accessories such as backing pads and interface pads depend on the diameter of your machine.

Which grit do I need?

Coarse (P24–P80) removes material, medium (P100–P180) shapes and levels, fine (P220–P400) smooths and prepares, very fine (P500–P1000) mattes paint, and ultra-fine (P1200 and up) is the finish before polishing. The grit guide explains every step; the abrasive finder tells you the grit for your project.

Will the discs fit my random orbital sander?

Yes, if the diameter (125 or 150 mm) and the hook-and-loop fixing match. The multi-hole pattern fits any hole layout. Every product page lists under “Technical details” which machines the product is made for.
